The Benefits Of A Seasonal Detox
Autumn is one of the best times to start a detox. Have you tried doing a detox? It requires time and attention, quality food plus a healthy routine of daily activities to fire up your metabolism. These are not fad diets a cleanse is important for our health and wellbeing, just as the earth benefits from the changes of seasons the body can also benefit from the process of renewal. They also prepare you for the harshness of the seasons that follow, the coldness of the winter or the heat of summer. We release waste toxins through our skin and are often looking for relief from bad digestion.Sweating is controlled by pores in the skin and a liver cleanse will help us to clear our skin. Some people have an even balance when it comes to living well, eating considerately, and exercising as part of day-to-day life. But most of us benefit from a little bit of rewiring.
A seasonal detox is vital to your health. The first thing to remember is to keep it simple and uncomplicated, so you don’t lose interest, drink plenty of alkaline water every day and eat seasonal fruits and vegetables. Try to drink more towards water and eat rich alkaline green vegetables such as celery and kale.
Seasonal fruits are highly nutritious you can also try blending them with green vegetables or superfood powders such as spirulina or chlorella to make them even more beneficial. Giving your body all it needs to encourage its natural detox process will help you to stay in optimum health all year. There are a variety of nutrients that are essential for detoxification and going without them will do you more harm than good. There is nothing more important to invest in than your health. Food’s high in vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and antioxidants will all support your body’s natural detoxification process. Fermented foods can also play a vital role in feeding your gut microbiome. So in short, avoid convenience foods, keep a diary to track your progress and make small positive lifestyle changes to begin with to form daily healthy habits which will make you feel happy and energised.
For a deeper detox go completely vegan for one week if you’re not already following a vegan diet. Going vegan a couple of times a year won’t kill you. Think of the benefits of a wholesome and balanced cleanse. More stable blood sugar, lower blood pressure and reduced unhealthy food cravings plus you’re not harming any animals. Encourage yourself to try a seven-day vegan challenge to start with. First on the priority list is to give up anything heavily processed and high in sugar, salt, and fat. If possible, hit the sauna and sweat out all those toxins, you can also book a few colonic therapy sessions and go for lymphatic drainage massage to strengthen the immune system, help the metabolism and your overall health.
When you go on a seasonal cleanse it’s also good to heal on all levels, not just physically but emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. It’s good to let go of old painful thoughts and emotions such as unforgiveness and anger. Seasonal detoxification is much needed for everyone, with changing seasons our body changes as well and different parts of our body need more attention. The most tried and tested time to follow a cleanse is during spring and autumn. The seasonal changes are very drastic from a warm summer to long colder winters. In winter we tend to eat and sleep more. Contrary to this we sleep less in summer due to longer lighter evenings. In winter, our body increases its metabolism, it can digest fat and proteins easily hence we eat more in winter and it’s why we tend to crave more sweet and oily foods. Summer comes with hot sunny days; in this weather our metabolism slows down and because of this we always look for easily digestible foods. In order to adapt to changes caused by the weather, we need to cleanse our body first.
In the cold weather most plants store energy in their roots. Hence the vegetables consumed in winter are root vegetables. People do not realise the importance of seasonal detoxification which plays a vital role in living a healthy lifestyle plus it also benefits in weight loss and a more glowing complexion. Detoxing improves your metabolism by cleansing the liver and removing toxins. You can include infused water with citrus fruits and vegetables on your detox which helps in weight reduction and improves digestion and liver functioning.
I like to make a jug of fresh cucumber and mint water and leave this in the fridge. Not only does this taste refreshing, drinking this for the full day will also help reduce inflammation and boost energy levels. Adapting unhealthy habits is continuously damaging to the liver and the liver performance gets disrupted. By cleansing toxins from the body, you’ll improve your body functioning and help remove inflammation. You will also need lots of rest with a detox.
Every year as the seasons change, we also naturally go through different cycles, phases, and stages of change. Nothing stands still in its current state. We can look at the seasons as having their own personalities while we may have our own definition, here are mine –
Autumn – We are here now, a season for preparation and slowing down.
Winter – A season for hibernation, and planning.
Spring – A season for growth and a fresh start.
Summer – A time for relaxing and adventures.
In Autumn there is still a lot of harvesting going on so there are still many fresh vegetables available. Autumn can be the last chance to detox and lose a few extra pounds before heading into the more quieter winter months. Detoxing can help strengthen the immune system preparing you for the cold and flu season which we all dread even more so with the Covid19 virus. It can also be more comfortable in autumn as the warm temperatures haven’t completely cooled down yet.
Detoxing in winter our body tends to be more inactive and colder so it’s a month when we need to be more disciplined and focused with a new routine. It’s a time for resting and recharging our energy, we also sweat less in winter. When we cleanse, we are lessening toxins, but they still stay in the body, so we need to sweat it out making this a good time to hit a local sauna or do a high intensity workout. We can also flush these through our system by drinking plenty of water. Our bodies also crave denser food to keep us warm, so we encourage cleansing with the seasons, so the body gets all the nutrients it needs.
Detoxing in spring, after a long winter we are ready to begin eating cleaner, moving more and just spring cleaning in general such as our home. The longer days allow more opportunity to get sunlight and light activity that help in the detoxification process. The change from winter to spring is a great time to hit the reset button and detox the body. Cleansing in spring can eliminate many seasonal allergies especially if we eat locally and seasonally.
Detoxing in the summer and the longer days we find ourselves more motivated to move our bodies. The warm weather makes it easier for the body to be in a detox process, craving fresh, light, and raw foods in spring and summer months. Fresh organic fruit and vegetables are abundant and more affordable plus the warmer weather helps with the elimination process, sweating more and shifting toxins naturally. We also have a lighter more relaxed mindset in summertime. Many people admit to having smaller appetites in the warmer weather. I also find that I’m more active and engaging in activities during warmer weather and not as focused on food as I can be in winter.
The seasonal detoxification procedure is designed to strengthen our digestion system, remove waste products, help break negative habits and have a positive effect on the body. On occasions we can all enjoy too much of the good life, even those of us who have balanced daily routines can be swayed into indulging in things that can give temporary satisfaction. When our habits don’t support our true nature and wellbeing, we accumulate metabolic waste which is why we may find ourselves with an extra ten pounds after an excessive and slower winter. Seasonal cleanses give you the opportunity to slow down enough and allows your body and digestion the space to resolve the effects of negative habits, it’s the ultimate renewal. While any detox requires some discipline, detoxing with the seasons will naturally support what is required of the body. Nothing has to be hard, it’s so easy to develop unhealthy habits so why not put the focus on the good ones instead. All it requires is a little forward planning and you will feel a lot healthier and more energised.
Top 5 tips for seasonal cleanses
- Create a plan and ask for support. Meal and exercise plans are essential for success. Planning will ease your stress around the process of cleansing and help prevent cravings.
- Make healthy habits like self-massage and mineral salt baths a priority. Dry brushing and oil self-massage can be beneficial for boosting our lymphatic system. Mineral Salt baths can follow self-massage as a way to relax at the end of the day before sleeping and it can be part of a relaxing self-care routine.

- Let go of excess social engagements – it’s important to be restful during a detox. You may need to block out a period of time where you will say no to outside arrangements. Your body will soon learn to enjoy these seasonal phases of freedom.
- Be easy on yourself even the most thought out plans sometimes need to change. Just use the opportunity to be positive and at ease with what approaches. This is what seasonal detoxes are about.
On a final note, there have been times when I have planned a deep cleanse to encounter life requires me to have a more lenient approach.
