The Easter bunny will soon be here with a basket full of chocolates, are you ready?
However, with a little preparation, you can celebrate in the happiest and healthiest way possible. It’s important to make conscious choices, so that you’re able to indulge in some treats and take part in festivities while also staying in tune with healthier habits.
Here are Zen’s top tips to do exactly that.
1 Stay active.
It’s easy to sit around when the holiday starts and not do anything, but that’s one of the worst things you can do. Many health gurus have said that spending time outdoors helps improve mental health.
So, enjoy that fresh air and go for a walk with family or friends. Since we typically spend time with family or friends for Easter, anyway, make it a group activity. Get out for a family walk, hike or bike ride and enjoy some fresh air.
2 Mindful eating.
Be mindful while eating and savour every bite. Eat slowly, chew and enjoy your food. This will not only help you eat less, but it will also help with digestion and allows you to enjoy the treat while not overeating.
3 Drink lots of water.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Sometimes we treat ourselves to other drinks and forget the classic mineral water. Water can also make you feel fuller, faster, so you don’t overeat, plus it has many more health benefits too.
4 Quality over quantity.
Go for a healthier chocolate choice when choosing an Easter egg! Look for something high in cocoa (75% or higher) – lots of antioxidants and health benefits. The better the chocolate, the more you will take the time to relax and savour it, which means you’re more likely to stop eating when you feel full.
5 Balance out your calories.
I will be indulging in some chocolate this Easter, but we know it is all about balance. Allow for a few chocolate treats and balance your calorie intake throughout the day – opt for a lighter breakfast or a salad for lunch and go easy on the liquid calories too.
6 A cracking good start to the day.
Eggs are the perfect breakfast, but not chocolate eggs. They’re packed with protein and amino acids, and they can help you to feel fuller for longer. Plus, it’s always fun colouring and decorating the outside of your free-range eggs whether you choose to have them hardboiled, poached or scrambled.
7 Enjoy a healthy Easter lunch.
On Easter Sunday, don’t dive straight into the roast or spend all afternoon picking at the sweets. Fill up with plenty of healthy vegetables during your main meal – these will not only count towards your five a day, but the fibre will also help to fill you up. Focus on fun not food, friendly conversation and company.
8 Say it without chocolate.
Chocolate isn’t just for Easter; traditionally new clothes are associated with the Easter holiday and the belief that the wearing of new clothes brought good luck. 9 Slow down and switch off.
With work, exercise, family and social commitments to balance, we often think of downtime as a luxury and time off an opportunity to fill with jobs. But it is important we purposefully take time to relax and unwind to enjoy positive health benefits from resting, recharging and rejuvenating. Turn off your phone or reduce your screen and scrolling time and make self-care a priority this Easter. 10 Don’t quit!
If you find that you end up indulging more than you intended, don’t just write off the whole weekend. Try to keep your movement levels up and see if you can get an extra workout in over the Easter break – even 30 minutes walking outside can be effective to your fitness, motivation and overall mood. There’s no need to feel bad and beat yourself up over this, it’s normal and part of the journey. Accept it happened, forgive yourself and move on.
