Pure Aromatherapy and its healing benefits.
I love everything natural and holistic and essential oils are natures gift to us all. Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy which uses essential oils to improve our health and wellbeing. We have used essential oils for thousands of years. A large part of its beauty lies in the positive scent memories that it can bring to mind. Our sense of smell is amazing and powerful and can be a great ally in our emotional wellbeing. What’s beautiful about our sense of smell is that it can evoke memories from everyday smells that we have access to, because of their deep emotional association to a person, place, or memory.
Aromatherapy is healing and balancing to both the body and mind, when used on the skin or by inhaling. Essential oils are the liquid extracts from various plants and trees. The oil infuses the body with tiny molecules that can enter the bloodstream to nourish and heal, calming the nervous system and by stimulating the body’s natural defences. Aromatherapy works on the basis that the smell of the essential oils triggers the limbic system: the part of the brain linked with emotion. Did you know that our brains tend to look out for danger? We are built on the need to survive, and our brain is always searching for what might hurt or attack us in some way. Try and practice focusing on joy and what moves you forward.
One of my favourite essential oils is rosemary, the herb which is associated with improving memory since ancient times. The good news is that we now have scientific studies to back it up. Rosemary oil can help with poor concentration and a lack of focus. Aromatherapy is therapeutic and beneficial, and the best bit is, most essential oils smell good. Learning to make blends and using essential oils properly is a serious process. Many essential oils have volatile compounds in a concentrated form that can offer therapeutic level healing in just a few drops. Less is better when working with oils and just a few drops can be highly beneficial.
Think about what positive scent memories you might have from your childhood that you can access or recreate today. A favourite perfume, flower, or plant. Whatever it may be, try focusing on a scent memory and use your sense of smell to boost your mood. Mine is Cocoa Butter, it always reminds me of my adventures through Southeast Asia. Our sense of smell can mentally bring back both positive and negative memories. Different areas of our brain can be stimulated to heal, release tension, or increase joy depending on the scent you choose. Using essential oils to bring these sensory feelings is an Ayurvedic method to create a healing pathway to the brain through the body. This can enhance both physical and emotional health and support for various conditions such as stress and anxiety. Essential oils often have a much stronger smell than the plants they come from and contain higher levels of active ingredients which is why some oils are more expensive to buy. A good gauge to determine if an oil is for you is the smile test. Do you smile when you smell it? If so, use it. Even so, certain oils are best for each person. With some knowledge you can create your own blends.
